How to make your own Homemade Natural Insect Repellent

natural insect repellent

The Almighty have no doubt account for insects in His great scheme of things, but to those of us who are not privy to His plan, insects remain a tiresome nuisance. Thankfully, several Essential oils have valuable repellent properties and this post will guide and show you some remedies for the treatment of insect bites and stings and most importantly this post will teach you how to make your own homemade natural insect repellent.

Five drops of either geranium, chamomile, or lavender oils added to a teaspoonful of aloe vera gel may be safely applied to the site of insect bite every few hours.

Lavender is a worthy ally in skirmishes against Insectavora. It is one the few oils which may be safely applied neat to an insect bite and will cause any pain to vanish in seconds. A pot of lavender keeps flies and moths at bay. A scrap of paper impregnated with a mixture of citrus oil and lavender is a marvelous weapon against mother moth's tenacious teeth.

Natural insect repellent

Geranium oil is another fragrant ally. Rubbing a tincture composed of four teaspoons of soya oil and sixteen drops of geranium oil over the body before venturing forth keeps most insects at bay.

Essential oils are also sturdy soldiers in the gardeners' infantry. Watering plants with a solution of five drops of lavender, ten drops of thyme in a sufficiency of water, agitated thoroughly to ensure that the oils are well dispersed, should keep all plants insect free. So, too, will five drops of clove and ten sage oils mixed with an amplitude of water and rained regularly over the garden.

For plants already infested, stronger treatment is advocated. Misting a plant with a spray composed of fifty drops of lavender, forty of fennel and four fluid ounces of water, should rid the beastly blight.

Stay tuned for more homemade perfume and scent ideas.
Until next time!!!

I think I'll try your recipe for keeping the bugs away. I'm one of those people who seems to attract mosquitoes and it drives me nuts! I've tried using citronella plants on our porch, and they smelled good, but didn't keep the bugs away. I'm willing to try anything this years. Thanks for the tips!

Another alternative is Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus (OLE). Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus is the only plant based ingredient approved by the EPA and CDC for use as a repellent. OLE is proven to work as well as DEET but without all the harmful side effects. I have tried the Repel Oil of Eucalyptus product and it really does work! It's a greener alternative to DEET.

It’s great to read such topical stuff on the web as I have been able to discover here. have been doing some research on natural repellants and have heard that yes citronella works for mosquitos, but other biting bugs are only turned off once they have already bitten you.

Here is an essential oil recipe that I have been using with quite a bit of success so far.

1) a base of glycerin from drug store (or organic oil vegitable base)
2) distilled witchhazel to thin it out (available at drug stores)
3) these esential oils :citronella, cedarwood oil, tea tree oil, sandlewood oil, pennyroyal, catnip oil.

Notes: pennyroyal should not be used on pregnant women. And catnip oil, will make your cat only slightly curious....but it is supposedly 10 times more effective than deet. The whole idea is to smell like a tree.

Mostly I am a magnate for deer flies and horse flies, and wasps. I am going to the woods this weekend for 4 days. i will report back with the ultimate grade on this natural formula.

Regards,
Josh

Essential oils, and aromatics in general, have been used throughout the ages to repel mosquitoes and other biting bugs. In all over the counter "natural" formulas, you'll find one or more essential oils as the "active ingredients". Making your own formulation is truly easy to do, and can be cost effective if you're going to go through a significant amount over the year. Making a lotion or spray is as simple as measuring essential oils by the drop into your base, be it an organic cream, or liquid such as witch hazel. One of the coolest thing about making your own is you have the ability to control all the ingredients, and make a completely organic formula if you like!

Insect repellents are in demand nowadays especially in Asian countries because of the life-threatening insect bites specifically that of Aedes aegypti mosquito which causes Dengue Hemorrhagic fever. I have heard that citronella oil that is obtained from the leaves and stems of different species of Cymbopogon is effective as insect repellents. However, to be continually effective most citronella repellent formulas need to be reapplied to the skin every 30–60 minutes. Anyway, thanks for sharing some great ideas. I'll try this for some other time.

Great to find your blog. I have begun blogging about all things lavender so was glad this amazing aromatic herb got a mention as it definietly works for repelling insects. Also,to the person who asks what attracts mosquitoes to some ppl and not others; it is your pesonal scent or smell. Also, if you are wearing some perfumes or lotions, there are some they are attracted to and some that repel them. Hope that helps.

My home is situated just near by a pond. It's a great thing, but since it is aside a pond, there is a high risk of insects being attacked, when its rain past season. I have been trying many of remedies, but couldn't get rid. It is probably due to fake treatment. I have read this post and i am keen to apply your formula. I hope it will make my home insect free.
Thanks!
